Cleaning up in Washington, DC

qed vols1Oct. 8, 2009 - Washington, DC - QED staff and friends took to the trails and waterways of Kingman Island Park on a beautiful Saturday in September. The volunteers battled insects to tackle heaps of car tires and other refuse, including broken glass and rusty car parts, all in an effort to clean up the often overlooked parkland in northeast Washington, DC.

QED staff teamed up with volunteers from the DC Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation and Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region, the nonprofit organization that runs the park, for the cleanup effort.  In addition to the efforts of 25 volunteers, QED made a donation to both organizations to support their work in the Washington area.

Matt English of Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region, the nonprofit organization that runs the park, said that QED’s “efforts are greatly appreciated and helped to restore some natural beauty to Kingman Island.”

Kingman and Heritage Islands are natural parklands located along the Anacostia River in Washington, DC.  The islands offer wooded trails, river views, and wetlands to their visitors—walkers, hikers, cyclists and boaters. Originally constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1916, the park is being developed as a project of the District of Columbia. More information on the park can be found at www.kingmanisland.org.

The September 19 outing marked the re-launching of QED’s community outreach activities. Future service activities will be held throughout the year, primarily benefiting organizations which provide assistance in the Washington, DC region in areas mirroring QED’s corporate interests.
